About Grizzly Peak Cyclists, Inc.

Thanks for visiting our WWW pages. Let us tell you something about our club. On this page we have general information, an overview of the club, a ride calendar legend, newsletter information, and (last, but not least) information on joining the club.

General Info

Grizzly Peak Cyclists, Inc. has been a California Nonprofit Mutual Benefit Corporation since 1981. We are a member organization of:

Our formal objectives are:

...to provide cyclists with a variety of challenging bicycle-riding experiences and to promote safe bicyle riding and touring.

Okay, that is the legal mumbo jumbo. Now on to the important information!

Overview

We have club rides most weekends in the year. We are based in the East Bay and have rides all over the Bay Area. Some of our club rides are held in conjunction with other bicycle clubs. We have some members leading mountain bike rides and self-contained tours.

Our annual Grizzly Peak Century draws a high level of volunteers from among our membership. We hold large introductory ride series a couple of times a year to introduce urban cyclists to the challenges of responsible group riding, with rides of increasing length and difficulty over the course of five or six weeks. In addition, there are often weekly pre-work and after-work training rides as well as frequent "Easy Rides" (see current ride listings for the current set).

Ride Calendar

Our ride calendar rates each ride according to pace, terrain, and distance, so that you can pick a ride that meets your needs. Our ride rating system explains how to interpret these ratings.

Anyone is welcome on the rides; reservations are encouraged to facilitate carpooling, but not required unless stated. Most of our members wear helmets, and we strongly encourage everyone to wear ANSI or SNELL-approved helmets. Persons under the age of 18 are required by law to wear a helmet. (Helmets are required on the Century.)

Many of our local rides start at a BART station to promote the use of public transit. Even if the ride doesn't start at a BART station, it is a handy way home in case of weather changes, mechanical problems, or rider fatigue.

A 30% chance of rain or showers will probably cancel the ride. If the weather looks doubtful on the morning of the ride, please call the ride leader.

The diversity of club rides depends on members of all levels providing leadership. Any club member can lead a ride, and the ride coordinator can help with choosing a route or rating a new route.

In addition to our monthly ride calendar, the club encourages members and their families and friends to attend major club events like the Calistoga Spa Ride which culminates in hot tubbing and dinner, the Post-Turkey Workout Ride, the New Year's Ride to Mt. Diablo, the Not-so-Rushin' River Ride, the Century Workers' Ride, the annual GPC bicycle rally and potluck picnic, plus much more.
